Ubuntu Start is released by Andrei from Webupd8, this script helps new users set up a few things most people do when they first install Ubuntu. The script adds extra repositories: Ubuntu restricted, extras, Medibuntu, Getdeb, Dropbox, and install from repository softwares like The GIMP, Pidgin, WINE, Chromium browser, Gnome Do, Guake, VLC media player, Mplayer, SMplayer, Thunderbird, Dropbox, Codecs..and more. This script actually available just for only Ubuntu 10.04 lucid Lynx

Features:

- Zenity for a GUI

- Adds extra repositories: Ubuntu restricted, extras, Medibuntu, Getdeb, Dropbox (only if you select to install Dropbox)

- Installs from repositories: The GIMP, Pidgin, WINE, Chromium browser, Gnome Do, Guake, VLC media player, Mplayer, SMplayer, Thunderbird, Dropbox, Codecs (multimedia, java, flash), additional archives support, DVD support and fonts, Ubuntu Tweak, Deluge Torrent, CompizConfig Settings Manager, Development tools (from build-essential to Subversion, GIT and so on).

- Downloads and installs the following: Google Chrome browser (will download the build for 32 or 64 bit, depending on your Ubuntu version), official smiley themes for Pidgin (for all the protocols), the latest Flash Player for 64bit via Adobe's website, Skype (32 or 64bit, depending on your Ubuntu version).

- Tweaks:

o Move window buttons to the right (Karmic style) Change Update Manager behavior to the one in Jaunty
o Remove mounted drive icons from desktop
o Disable the GDM login sound
o Enable the icons in menus and buttons
o Disable the GDM login user list
o Remove the ubuntu-docs package (frees up 252MB)
o Change Gnome Calendar first day of the week from Sunday to Monday
o Downloads, installs and configure sharp fonts
o Fix 'apt-get update' delay for Google repository
o Automatically mount NTFS drives on startup

- Automatically accepts the JAVA license so you don't have to

- The Medibuntu server is currently down which made me develop a new feature: the script now tests the main Medibuntu server and 2 other mirrors and adds whichever of these 3 is working.

- Lots of checks to make sure you run the script proprely: will check if the script is ran as root, if Synaptic, apt-get, dpkg or Software Center is running and will ask you to close it before running the script, checks the internet connection to make sure you can actually install the packages, etc.

Download and Install ubuntu Start

Download Ubuntu start script :

For newbies : To save the script on your computer, click the download link above then go to file-->Save page as on your browser and choose the  folder where you want to save the script.

Installation :

Because this script need Zenity installaed to work properly, first install it :

sudo apt-get install zenity

- Now download Ubuntu start from the link above, and cd the directory where you downloaded the script, in my case

cd /home/zinovsky/Downloads/ubuntu-10.04-start/

- Now make the script executable using this commad :

chmod +x ubuntu-10.04-script

Now run the script :

sudo ./ubuntu-10.04-script

You will got this screen as step one, choose what you want to do then click ok

After you will got a screen with step2 , just check in the software you want to install and click OK

Is done !

I tested this script 2 times in my lucid installed in a virtual machine and in my laptop , in both the script worked just fine without any errors.

Great job Andrei!!

Just a note: could you please add this download link: http://launchpad.net/ubuntustart/trunk/0.4.2/ +download/ubuntu-10.04-script instead of http://launchpadlibrarian.net/44696461/ubuntu- 10.04-script ?

Because the link you posted will not get the updated script in case I fix a bug or something.

Hi, I'm experimenting with installing Lucid Lynx onto my virtual box - it seems that it doesn't like the x86_64 kernel that I downloaded and is asking for i386 kernel. How do I install onto Virtual Box, it would be great if you could share this tip as to how you managed to install the lucid lynx onto your virtual box. I want to try the script for new users....cheers.

Thanks for the tip about 32bit version - it worked. I did the script and it is such a wonderful little script - a few applications that I didn't know about too, such as Ubuntu Tweak - wow that's cool! Thank you so much for the script - it makes life so much easier! Now I'm so glad that I've converted from openSUSE to Ubuntu - I was worried that linux wasn't going to be user friendly after my experience with openSUSE but with your script it has swayed me to like Ubuntu more than ever and making it user friendly too especially for newbies like me!

This posted in the Ubuntu forum by me
I have been working for days on putting Lucid on a Gateway mx6028 laptop with a new hard drive,, But I'm beginning to understand that my problems.. may be more generalized.. but tricky

Basically the install can be done from The lucid install only if the disk has been wiped,, otherwise the grub or mbr is messed up (don't know which)

I take a backup using Remastersys

I am really new to Linux and my friend suggested Ubuntu 10.04 and I must say so far I love it. I stumbled across this site and thought I would try these programs out. Everything seemed to be ok but now the terminal is stuck on Package configuration blue/grey screen with the title of Postfix Configuration in red and I am really not sure how to make it say ok so it will go forth. Hello :)
I used this script for ubuntu lucid 64bit.
    So, I've just one question:
all the repos, programs, and other stuff downloaded and installed with this script, are automatically 64bit version?
Because I have already ran the script and I don't know what it has installed and if it could give problems :/
    (it's my first 64bit OS :/ )

    Thank you very much ^_^

  • Andrew

@Tomas: Yes, it automatically installs the applications for 32 or 64bit, depending on your system.

  • Rajeev  - Issue with mounted drives after installation
    avatar

    Hi Zinovsky,

    Great Job.
But I am facing an issue afetr running the script. My regular partition is throwing the below error and I am not able to access any data on it.

    ***********Error message*******
Error mounting: mount exited with exit code 1: helper failed with:
Unprivileged user can not mount NTFS block devices using the external FUSE
library. Either mount the volume as root, or rebuild NTFS-3G with integrated
FUSE support and make it setuid root. Please see more information at
    http://ntfs-3g.org/support.html#unprivileged
    ***********************

It has also added two new mount points /dev/sda4 and /dev/sda6 which also give me the same error as above. The fstype is HPFS/NTFS whereas I remeber that I never had any NTFS partition on my disk before.By the way I had installed 10.04 about a month back on side by side of 9.04. Could this have caused any complications?

    Thanks for any help..
    R

To resolve this issue, run the script again and remove : Automatically mount NTFS drives on startup.
when the script start look to the bottom of the list you will find this option. If it is selected try to remove it.

Well, I spent some time choosing what to install in stage 2 (only 7 packages)...and then it went ahead and install almost everything :-(
Waited for 1.5 hours watching it download ~ a hundred MB of stuff I don't need. Was afraid to interrupt it. Now I have to manually remove the unwanted stuff. I clearly didn't choose mplayer and yet it install it
