I had struggled with my nvidia 6800 gs and Ubuntu in the past. I had to pull the card out and use the Intel chipset to get started, and often I still couldn't get the drivers to work after loading them through Synaptic (7.04 worked, 9.04 did not). This tutorial worked exactly as advertised. There must be some setting where the restricted driver manager works when a Synaptic driver install doesn't.

Before to start, if you want to install Ubuntu 9.04 Jaunty Jackalope in a pc with other grafic card than Nvidia then go here.For Nvidia cards , Many peoples who have a PC with Nvidia graphic cards find the problem to install Ubuntu on their pc, happen that when you try to run ubuntu live cd on a your pc with nvidia graphic card, you got a black screen, or when you try to install it directly, you got the same thing. In this tutorial we will explain you the steps you will have to follow to install first your Ubuntu and then install your Nvidia graphic card( in my computer I got Nvidia 8400GS). You can follow the same steps in this tutorial if you want to install Ubuntu9.10 karmic koala in a PC with Nvidia graphic card but you got a black screen (black screen after x splash). So If you got this issue before with Jaunty you will have it also when you will try to install ubuntu9.10 Karmic Koala (did happen to me with Nvidia 8400 GS).
If you don`t got black screen and you can access to your ubuntu but you want just to install nvidia drivers ,then please do this before to continue reading the rest of the tutorial:
If you tried before to install the nvidia drivers from the website nvidia.com , then make sure that the driver from nvidia.com are not installed, use the command bellow to unstall drivers from nvidia.com.
sudo sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86-180.51-pk1.run -uninstall
administration --->Hardware drivers (see bellow)

The driver will be downloaded and installed

- For Ubuntu9.10 Karmic Koala :

NB : For Ubuntu Karmic koala , choose latest version 185
Note that for Karmic koala you have to add first the repositories and install the propriety drivers see here
Now look is Nvidia drivers has been installed and you can enjoy you Ububtu 9.04.

2009-11-23 17:14:14 | gianpaolo racca - I can't understand this tutorial...

You say that this tutorial is for those who have blank screen after X splash, but the solution you figure to solve the problem is to use the GUI to enable restricted drivers... is this right? I have only a blank screen after livecd bootup. What am I supposed to do?
I'm trying to install 9.10 karmic koala

Same as Gianpaolo above.
If I cannot get past the blank screen, how can I activate the restricted drivers?
This tutorial is missing the point.

When you got the welcome screen of ubuntu live cd, choose your language and then press F4 and shoose start with graphic safe mode, then your ubuntu will start and follow the installation steps. After the installation is finished , restart and then you will be able to enable restricted drivers,

Unfortunately this is not my case. Even selecting "graphic safe mode" I still get a black screen with the monitor complaining for "out of range mode".
