Fix Virtualbox guest addition installation issue in Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick Meerkat

To customize ubuntu 10.10 Maverick Meerkat, check our post : Top things to do after installing Ubuntu 10.10 Marevick Meerkat

To activate the fullscreen mode in a virtualbox machine, we need to install Guest additions in the guest OS. If you are testing Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick meerkat in virtualBox , you may notice that guest additions are not working, it seems that the problem is the new xserver they put in ubuntu10.10, the modules are not build against this new version (See screenshot bellow). To fix this issue i used the methode bellow to install Guest additions in Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick Meerkat, this methode consist on installing a new xserver display packages which works well.

Open terminal and enter the commands bellow:

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install build-essential linux-headers-$(uname -r)
sudo apt-get install virtualbox-ose-guest-x11

After installation is finished, restart your virtualBox machine then go to System –>Preferences –>Monitors and change the resolution of your screen.

Update : VirtualBox 3.2.10 is released. This release Added support to X.Org Server 1.9, so to fix the guest addition issue you  just need to upgrade your virtualbox to the current release.

I did what was written but after reboot I can’t change résolution in monitors utility.
Then I tried to reinstall the virtualbox guest addititons from the cd and a big screen bug happens !!
I tried also to desinstall and reinstall from tty1 console and when I come back to tty7 or even if I reboot it doesn’t work as described.
Can u please tell me in wich order did you install the packets?
    Thx in advance.

  • carl

I just uninstalled all virtualbox ose additions.
    Then I rebooted.
Then I apt-get autoremove (so that it finishes uninstalling dkms).
Then I just installed from the console tty1 the virtualbox-ose-guest-x11 as said up in this page.
Then I came to the tty7 where my graphical session was started and then I relogged to my session where the new resolution was enabled.

    Thx fot the tip!!

VirtualBox was updated on 10/11/2010… It now supports the new X Server…

  • deesto

Thanks. Unfortunately, this doesn’t help in my case. VirtualBox guest add-ons not working was the first thing I noticed after upgrading a few hours ago, and I can’t figure out how to get them working again. I’ve already got headers, build essentials, and virtalbox-ose[dkms|guest-utils|guest-x11|qt] and virtualbox-guest-additions all installed. Something’s still not right.

  • rh

    big thx!

  • Acerimmer

    Works precisely as advertised.

3.2.10 worked indeed, but still, during the Guest Additions installation, the screen enlarged and then filled with random ASCII characters and the system was unresponsive even to the shutdown signal. Reset, restart and it was OK.
I’d send you a picture if I knew how to.

  • Ouray3

    Your solution is much appreciated.
Took me a while to get the screen res worked out.
    You made it easy!

  • chris

my resolution is still not fullscreen… 1152×864 instead of 1280×1024
and the second screen isnt recognized eather…

    any ideas?

  • Aram Fingal

This is at least the fifth hint I’ve tried to fix the resolution problem. It sort of worked the first time. Immediately on rebooting I was up to 1152×864 instead of the 800×600 I was previously stuck at. Then, I went to System –>Preferences –>Monitors, as suggested and found that there was a resolution something like 1392×768 as well as 1152×768. I tried the other resolution, which worked but I didn’t really like it so I tried to switch back to 1152×864 which gave an error message and caused that resolution to disappear from the preference screen. I tried going back to the 1392×768 resolution and that gave the same error and it too disappeared. Now I’m back to 800×600 and 640×480 as my only options.

  • Aram Fingal

Go to the Machine menu of Virtual Box and select Adjust Window Size. Then you can drag the window to any size you want and it will adjust the resolution in Ubuntu accordingly. Full Screen mode also works. Adjusting the resolution from within Ubuntu does not work but that’s okay. This is better anyway.

  • Jarad Downing

Resolution was working fine but more advanced desktop settings (normal visual effects), this line in particular is necessary:
sudo apt-get install virtualbox-ose-guest-x11
Select Y when prompted to use the new x settings.

    Host OS: Win 7 64-bit
    VM: Oracle’s VBox Mgr 4.0
    Guest OS: Ubuntu 10.10 64-bit
I cannot get the Ubuntu window to open up. 800×600 is the max size. I have tried several solutions (without success) except for download/mount/install guest additions. What’d be the sequence to try this route? Or is there a better way? Thanks, Dean

Every one remembers that modern life is high priced, nevertheless some people require cash for different issues and not every one gets big sums money. Thence to receive some home loans or consolidation loans would be a proper way out.

  • SawyerEarnestine

Do you recognize that this is correct time to get the home loans, which would help you.

  • Erica28Acevedo

The personal loans seem to be very useful for people, which would like to start their organization. In fact, that is very comfortable to get a collateral loan.

  • Koch26AUTUMN

I guess that to receive the mortgage loans from banks you must present a good reason. Nevertheless, once I’ve received a consolidation loan, just because I was willing to buy a building.

  • LUISALittle31

The business loans suppose to be essential for people, which would like to start their career. In fact, it’s very comfortable to get a consolidation loan.

  • Aaron Newton

Champion – this did the trick for me. I have posted this as a solution here

Also, there seems to be a common-ish issue where the Guest Additions stop working after the Update Manager upgrades are performed. I have posted a related comment here on how to solve this:

Basically I removed the Guest Additions first by running “sudo /opt/[VboxAddonsFolder]/” and then followed the instructions above.
