install apache2 php and mysql in ubuntu

Written by Mel Kham on . Posted in Linux tutorials

In this tutorial we will try to show you how to install apache2,php and mysql on Ubuntu

Installing Apache

Now we can get started installing. This will take a few minutes, so grab a beer (or your favorite beverage,) and off we go. To install Apache, type or paste this into your terminal:

sudo apt-get install apache2

Testing Apache

Once apache2 is done installing, you can go ahead and test it by using:

sudo /etc/init.d/apache2 start

If you get a message that it’s already running, you’re good to go. Now, open up your browser and navigate to:

http://localhost/

Installing PHP

Again, to install PHP, type or paste this into your terminal:

sudo apt-get install php5 libapache2-mod-php5

Once it’s finished installing, restart apache, using:

sudo /etc/init.d/apache2 restart

Testing PHP

Now, let’s make sure that PHP is working properly. To do this, we’re going to run phpinfo(). You can, of course, swap out gedit with your editor of choice.

sudo gedit /var/www/phpinfo.php

Type or paste the following into the document, and save it. (remove the space before the ‘?php’)

Now we can test PHP by browsing to:

http://localhost/phpinfo.php

You should see all of the info about your PHP installation listed on the page, like so. For security reasons, you should remove this page when you’re sure that PHP works.

Installing MySQL

Now we can conquer MySQL

sudo apt-get install mysql-server

As MySQL is installing, it will ask you to configure your root password. Make sure that you type it correctly, as it will only ask you once.

Testing MySQL

After that is finished, you can test MySQL by running this, where unixmen is your password

mysql -uroot -punixmen

If it brings you to a MySQL prompt, you're done! You can type exit to get out of MySQL.

Installing phpMyAdmin

Now, if you want to install phpMyAdmin to have a front end for MySQL, you can use the following

sudo apt-get install libapache2-mod-auth-mysql php5-mysql phpmyadmin
It will ask you to choose a webserver to configure automatically, you can use the space bar to select Apache2. And after that's finished, restart one last time.

sudo /etc/init.d/apache2 restart

Finished!

Now you have your own LAMP (Linux Apache MySQL PHP) server, with phpMyAdmin

The End

Now, to pull up your phpMyAdmin panel, you can point your browser at...
http://localhost/phpmyadmin

To log in and use PMA.

Useful Commands and Default Locations

To Save yourself some time, you can make launchers for Apache or MySQL start, stop, and restart if you feel the need.

Apache

sudo /etc/init.d/apache2 start
sudo /etc/init.d/apache2 stop
sudo /etc/init.d/apache2 restart

MySQL

sudo /etc/init.d/mysql start
sudo /etc/init.d/mysql stop
sudo /etc/init.d/mysql restart

Locations

/var/www/ -- Document Root
http://localhost/phpmyadmin -- phpMyAdmin
/usr/share -- phpMyAdmin local location
As MySQL is installing, it will ask you to configure your root password. Make sure that you type it correctly, as it will only ask you once.
This is not entirely correct, at least not for installation on Ubuntu – installation procedure asks for password confirmation, which means – twice

Just one thing:

What about pep8 in your python code ? How can you give ‘tutorials’ on quite popular website, of such a bad quality ?

Larry Page is not being completely honest! The manner in which the PRISM program/project works does not need access from company administrators or owners, so called “direct access”; the access to the information is already there. These tech company CEOs take for granted the actual intelligence of most end users of their products. All it takes is a little digging and reading to go from ignorant to informed on these things especially on exactly how the internet works/functions in the U.S.A. I find Larry Page’s remarks just as laughable as Al Gore’s claim to “inventing” the internet/world wide web!

If you, as an end user, are reading this post; I challenge you to research these matters yourself. It really is quite simple with all the “information sites” that exist on the web today ie Wikipedia, & other online encyclopedias that actually list source material, as well as highly respected tech sites and blogs that also list their source material. Be warned: this is only the tip of the iceberg and these tech CEOs know and understand this; they are scrambling in attempt to perform DAMAGE CONTROL to save the company and what little trust thay have left from their products end users/consumers.

Am I a skeptic? I believe someone has to be or needs to be at this point in time! If your not just a little skeptical of the government, tech companies, and the people that are in charge of these agencies and companies; you need to be, even if just a little skeptic. For your own personal protection and security! I know I was a part of this community for over 14 years!

As I understand it so do VLC use same encoders as ffmpeg. And yes, there are less code that can break when you use command line instead of a graphical UI.

And may I ask what mono has to do with VLC? *facepalm*

Just some thoughts about Java.

OpenJDK7 are now THE Java implementation and Oracles are just one more of the reimplementations. So you should not need to install Oracles version.

And you really don’t need to remove the OpenJDK7 installation to also have Sun Java JDK 7. Just run

sudo update-java-alternatives –list

and select which java you want to have as default java of all that is installed.

And if you want to run a program with one special version, check manpage for java-wrappers how to do that.

man java-wrappers

so you can run java program rasterizer like this:

JAVA_FLAVOR=openjdk rasterizer
JAVA_ARGS=-Xmx80m rasterizer

JAVA_BINDIR=/usr/share/

etc
