Written by Mel Kham on . Posted in Frequently Asked Questions

Question : I installed Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick Meerkat, everything works fine, i activated the recommended Nvidia proprietary Graphics driver, when i reboot my computer then i got  on a blank screen – Totaly black screen-, How to have my GDM login screen back?

Answer:

Reading some forum, i got surprised when i found that many people go for reinstall ubuntu /Mint when they got a black screen, i know  after activating recommended propriety driver you can get this issue, especialy in Ubuntu 10.10 and LinuxMint10 (tested for Both with Nvidia recommended propriety driver with a Nvidia Geforce 8 series)

Newbies, Next time you got a black screen, this is what you have to do:

1- reboot your computer, and start using recovery mode

2-

If you Got black screen first

To avoid having Black screen after installing ubuntu 10.10 maverick Meerkat or LinuxMint 10 Julia ( I had the same issue with both)

There are 2 solutions :

1- When you first install Ubuntu, instead of activating the recommended Nvidia propriety driver, activate the 173 instead.

To activate go to : Menu  System–>Administration–>Additional Drivers and activate the 173 version driver.

Additional_Drivers_030

2-The second solution is to install the 253.53 display driver:

{xtypo_warning}This driver will only work for Geforce 6 series and above{/xtypo_warning}

Open terminal and copy the following commands:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntu-x-swat/x-updates
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install nvidia-current nvidia-current-modaliases nvidia-settings

Now go to Menu  System–>Administration–>Additional Drivers and activate the current Nvidia driver

I tried it and it works with a regular zip file, but if you password-protect the .zip file it does NOT work.
