What is Gnome Pie

Gnome Pie is an ideal, very attractive and stylish application launcher for Gnome.  Being an Ubuntu desktop geek, there are quite few apps that are being used frequently by you, so why those apps shouldn’t be given a cool shortcut which looks super amazing increasing the beauty of the desktop?  The answer is Gnome Pie that comes in handy with a very easy way to install.

Features & Bugs Fixes in Gnome Pie

The current version of Gnome Pie available is Gnome Pie 0.6.1 that was just released with some new features & fixing the known bugs.

Here are the notable improvements, yeah I am also feeling excited to know them 🙂

  1. Woot! It is now possible to have half or quarter pies, once opening the pie, choose your favorite shape.
  2. Want to eat more slices in a pie, you can have it now.
  3. A new theme has been added which can be tweaked and modified.
  4. New icon has been designed for the pie.

The following bugs got kicked out:

  1. At 100% CPU, Gnome Pie used to get hanged, it’s been fixed now.
  2. Drag & drop icons to become invisible has been fixed.
  3. A bug that was causing tree view items to have no icons in the settings menu is also fixed now.
  4. Changed VM_CLASS which enables launchers to track windows properly.
  5. It is possible to save trigger modes even if no binding is defined.

The current version has also got two new updates:

  1. The current installed themes can be tweaked and modified now.
  2. Translation update into German & Spanish.

How to Install Gnome Pie

Assuming you have got Gnome installed on your desktop, installing Gnome Pie is very much easy.  As the official PPA is available, all we need to do is to add it to our local server & updating the local repository afterwards following the installation of Gnome Pie package.

1. Adding the local repository, run the following command:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:simonschneegans/testing

2. Update the local repository:

sudo apt-get update

3. Install the package:

sudo apt-get install gnome-pie

Our package is installed and now we are going to launch the application, press CTRL + ALT + A to launch it. Here we go:

We can modify the settings of pie as per our choice:

In order to add new pie, click the + icon & vice versa as shown in the following snapshot in Red Circle:
