Ubuntu Powers The World’s Fastest Computer

Canonical is helping China to run Ubuntu in one of the most powerful supercomputer in the world which is located in the Guangdong province in China.

The supercomputer server Tianhe-2 will be fully equipped with Ubuntu Server, Ubuntu Openstack and Ubuntu’s orchestration tool, Juju. The main goal is to make it easy for Government departments to rapidly deploy and manage very high performance cloud environments. According to the official announcement, Tianhe-2 now will be able to deliver high performance OpenStack. And all this thanks to OpenStack and Ubuntu Juju technologies.

Juju is a feature rich tool that is used to configure, manage, maintain, deploy and scale efficiently private or hybrid clouds. It can be used either from a powerful GUI or the command-line.

“To see the fastest supercomputer running OpenStack is already a beautiful thing,” said Mark Shuttleworth, founder of Ubuntu. “To see it running OpenStack with workloads orchestrated by Ubuntu Juju is incredibly powerful. We can’t wait to see it rolled out further.”, reads the official announcement.

Tianhe-2 is being developed by Chinese National University of Defense Technology in an effort to move the Chinese tech industry to the next level. The supercomputer operates at 33.86 petaflop/sec, it uses Intel Xeon processors and has a 160Gb per second interconnect for super-fast data transfer between nodes.
