TypeCatcher: An Easy Way To Download And Install Google Web Fonts

TypeCatcher is an Open Source application developed by Andrew Starr-Bochicchio. It allows you to easily download and install Google webfonts for off-line use.

Using TypeCatcher, we can easily:

– Preview fonts with adjustable size and text,

– Search Fonts by name,

– Download fonts,

– Install/Uninstall fonts in our computer,

– Search fonts description directly from the website.

This application is very simple, but very useful for designers, web developers and content makers etc.

Installation

Typecatcher can be installed using PPA developed by Andrew.

Add the following PPA in Ubuntu 13.04, 12.10 distros.

$ sudo add-apt-repository ppa:andrewsomething/typecatcher

Update the sources list with command:

$ sudo apt-get update

Now install TypeCatcher using command:

$ sudo apt-get install typecatcher

In Ubuntu 14.10/14.04/13.10, TypeCatcher is available in the official repositories. So you don’t have to add the PPA. You can directly install it with the following command.

$ sudo apt-get install typecatcher

Usage

Open TypeCatcher either from your Dash or Menu. It will look like below.

TypeCatcher_001As you see in the above picture, you can select the desired fonts in the left pane. The selected font details will be shown in the right pane.

TypeCatcher_002Install Fonts:

If you want to install a particular font, just select it from the left pane and install it using the Download button in the menu bar.

TypeCatcher_003Now you can use the installed font in all system applications ex. Libre Office. After font installation, you will notice that there is a tick mark in the right side of preview pane.

TypeCatcher_005If your application doesn’t show up the fonts or breakup the letters with the new installed fonts, just restart the application. Now you will be able to use the font without any issues.

Note: You can’t install all fonts at once, you can only install one font at a time.

Uninstall Fonts:

To uninstall the fonts, simply select the fonts you want to uninstall and click on the Trash icon on the menu bar.

TypeCatcher_006After uninstall the selected font, you will notice that the tick mark is gone.

Find Fonts Details:

TypeCatcher also allows you to see the particular font details from it’s website. Click on the Font Info icon next to the Trash icon. It will open the corresponding font website to view the details of the font.

TypeCatcher_007Once you click on the Font info button, TypeCatcher will open the selected font webpage to view its details in a new tab from your browser.

Google Fonts Neuton - Mozilla Firefox_008TypeCatcher allows you to increase and decrease the font size while preview it. You can also search for a particular font using the search box in the top corner.
