To install softwares on ubuntu 8.10 you have to use always the command :
sudo apt-get install softwarename
for example to install vlc you have to type :
sudo apt-get install vlc
BRAND new to Acer netbook and also to Linux. Really stupid questions for you experts – but I am in my SPREADSHEETS and I want to go to CELL A1. As Windows user I would press CTRL + HOME. I can press the (blue) FN and (blue) HOME but get to the 1st entry on the line. I cannot find ANY other “HOME” key on this little keyboard.

I only bought a little Acer Aspire A110 netbook, which came with Linux. I thought it looked like FUN when a friend showed me his! I had NO idea this was going to involve me in possibly going to University to understand.

Hitherto, I have always used Windows (sorry), now I enter another world. If I ask a question, up come other things I know nothing about, like:

Mandriva, Fedora, Ubuntu 8.10, Thunderbird etc. And “UNIX” (is this LINUX).

I can’t even do simplest of things, like changing the DATE FORMAT from MM/DD/YY to DD/MM/YY. When I try to find out how, I get the most horrendously (detailed) complicated information back.

I am a Bear of Little brain & you ‘guys’ are all so clever.

I just want SIMPLE little instructions!!!

I wanted to connect my printer (out here in Turkey where I purchased it) found something here http://www.unixmen.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=72:installation-canon-lbp2900-on-linux&catid=15:hardware-linux&Itemid=48

    And couldn’t understand a word.

    reporting a missing link here.

.. the model of the printer is different to the one you supplied the answer for. Mine is a CANON PIXMA MP210. I have an ACER ASPIRE one A110-Ab mini-laptop (so no CD/DVD drive). I tried the Canon solutions page but came up if it is a driver I need to install I then was unable to identify WHICH of the versions they had (for Linux). Bear of Little Brain would love your help!

I tried it and it works with a regular zip file, but if you password-protect the .zip file it does NOT work.

After install as above, run shell script /opt/Citrix/ICAClient/wfica.sh manually and note lib errors still occur. I had the x64 motif loaded but had to manually install the x86 too. Got that from http://rpmfind.net/linux/rpm2html/search.php?query=libXm.so.4 Even after that, I still had to do a “yum install alsa-lib.i686 alsa-lib.x86_64″ to resolve any additional libasound.so.2 errors. Once those two lib issues were resolved, Citix Web Interface launched apps fine by telling browser to open launch.ica using /opt/Citrix/ICAClient/wfica.sh. Good luck Ernesto!
