Install joomla 1.6 in Ubuntu Server | Linux

Written by Mel Kham on . Posted in Joomla

Joomla is a free and open source content management system (CMS) for publishing content on the World Wide Web and intranets. It comprises a model–view–controller  (MVC) Web application framework that can also be used independently.

Joomla is written in PHP, uses object-oriented programming (OOP) techniques and software design patterns, stores data in  a MySQL database, and includes features such as page caching, RSS feeds, printable versions of pages, news flashes, blogs, polls, search, and support for language internationalization.

Within its first year of release, Joomla was downloaded 2.5 million times. Over 5,000 free and commercial plug-ins are available for it.

To install Joomla in Ubuntu you need to have LAMP server and PHPmyadmin  installed in your Ubuntu. To install LAMP please follow the instructions in our previous post.

Now, First install LAMP and PHPmyadmin.

Second : Open Phpmyadmin and create a new  database:

To access phpmyadmin Open your favorite browser and type

  http://ip/phpmyadmin or http://hostname/phpmyadmin

Now create a user  for  this  database

-Download  the  lastest version of  Joomla  1.6 from Joomla  webiste (Joomla 1.6 still in BETA):

  • Open terminal and type :
cd  /var/www
  • Download Joomla using wget:
wget http://joomlacode.org/gf/download/frsrelease/13037/56655/Joomla_1.6-xxxx-Full_Package.tar.gz
  • Now extract  the  file :
tar  -zxvf Joomla_1.6-Beta12-Full_Package.tar.gz
  • Create  an empty  configuration file  with  full  access
touch configuration.php

And give it the permission

chmod 777 configuration.php

In your favorite browser open    http://ip/installation to  start  the  installation of joomla

Now  installation is finished

Before to start using your joomla website you need to    remove  or  move   installation directory

mv installation  INSTALLATION

changes  writes or  configurations.php  file

sudo chmod 644   configuration.php

Now    open  your  first  standard  joomla  page

To access  your  admin  control panel  go http://localhost/administrator/ and enter your login and password.

Done.

I could not get past the wget stage, writes: CANNOT WRITE TO JOOMLA_1.5…………..TAZ.GZ ( PERMISSION DENIED)

    what am I doing wrong?

    • gmxer

      I did it……

I found two minor problems with these instructions:

    1. touch onfiguration.php

    Should be "configuration.php"

    2. When testing the newly installed Joomla page, the instructions state to browse to http://localhost/.

This brought up the Apache test page, not the Joomla page. Instead, I had to enter http://localhost/index.php. Then it worked.

      how did you do it?
      wget : permission denied…..

did you try "sudo wget [url]". you might need root priveleges. may be easier to just download it from the website

  • Anonymous

ONE BIG major flaw in your instructions is the main page of joomla. it returns to the apache page rather then the joomla

  • cris

"In your favorite browser open http://ip/installation to start the installation of joomla"

in the version 1.6.1-stable-full-release, the page that starts the install process is

    http://localhost/bjoomla/b

I’m having a problem doing this installation on Ubuntu 10.04.

Every time I try doing tar -zxvf Joomla_1.6-Beta12-Full_Package.tar.gz.

    I Keep getting

tar: Joomla_1.6-Beta12-Full_Package.tar.gz: Cannot open: No such file or directory
tar: Error is not recoverable: exiting now
    tar: Child returned status 2
tar: Exiting with failure status due to previous errors

Tried doing Sudo as well and still getting the same response.

    what am I doing wrong?

Larry Page is not being completely honest! The manner in which the PRISM program/project works does not need access from company administrators or owners, so called “direct access”; the access to the information is already there. These tech company CEOs take for granted the actual intelligence of most end users of their products. All it takes is a little digging and reading to go from ignorant to informed on these things especially on exactly how the internet works/functions in the U.S.A. I find Larry Page’s remarks just as laughable as Al Gore’s claim to “inventing” the internet/world wide web!

If you, as an end user, are reading this post; I challenge you to research these matters yourself. It really is quite simple with all the “information sites” that exist on the web today ie Wikipedia, & other online encyclopedias that actually list source material, as well as highly respected tech sites and blogs that also list their source material. Be warned: this is only the tip of the iceberg and these tech CEOs know and understand this; they are scrambling in attempt to perform DAMAGE CONTROL to save the company and what little trust thay have left from their products end users/consumers.

Am I a skeptic? I believe someone has to be or needs to be at this point in time! If your not just a little skeptical of the government, tech companies, and the people that are in charge of these agencies and companies; you need to be, even if just a little skeptic. For your own personal protection and security! I know I was a part of this community for over 14 years!
