How to install Java run time environment in Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx

Written by Mel Kham on . Posted in Linux tutorials

Java runtime environment JRE was moved to the partner repository in Ubuntu , so now if you want to install it you have to do it from the command line.

Open the terminal and add Lucid partner  repository using the command  :

sudo add-apt-repository "deb http://archive.canonical.com/ lucid partner"

Note : If the command above diden`t work for you, just retype the quotations “” and will work for you.

Refresh the sources list

sudo apt-get update

Now install sun Java packages using command :

sudo apt-get install sun-java6-jre sun-java6-plugin sun-java6-fonts

Done !

The line to add in /etc/apt/sources.list is:

    deb http://archive.canonical.com/ubuntu lucid partner

The line in the instructions is incorrect, it is mistaken with the command to do the same thing without manually editing sources.list.

I just installed the new Ubuntu 10.04 and then Eclipse which did not want to start running without JRE. I tried some other pages which had ALMOST the same commands as you. But you had the most important notice:

Note : If the command above diden`t work for you, just retype the quotations “” and will work for you.

    And that was the solution!

Thank you once again and keep doing your good work!

Go to http://www.java.com/en/download/ and click “Do I have Java?” and follow the steps.

After a few minutes it will install icedtea6-plugin for the web browser and Openjdk Java Runtime.

    Good Luck :)
