OpenOffice.org 3.x is the leading open-source open software suite for word processing, spreadsheets, presentations, graphics, databases and more.  You can adjust openoffice to your needs by adding more functionality with the help of extensions. In this article we chosed for you some useful extensions for openoffice with installation guide.



1- Sun Weblog Publisher

The Sun Weblog Publisher allows you to quickly create, edit and publish weblog entries on many popular Blog servers. It is easy to use so that any user can start blogging right away! Use the advanced word processing features of the Writer to create blogs with tables, bullets, hyperlinks, graphics, and spellchecking via the office suite’s spellchecking technology

Supports a number of Blog platforms, including Roller, WordPress, Generic ATOM and Generic MetaWeblog

Requires StarOffice 8 (Update 4 or higher) or OpenOffice.org (2.0.4 or higher).

2- OpenOffice.org2GoogleDocs – export & import to Google Docs, Zoho, WebDAV

Export, Update and Import your documents to and from Google Docs, Zoho and WebDAV servers.
With OOo2GD you may export to Google Docs, Zoho and WebDAV servers:
* Documents: ODT, SXW, DOC, RTF without modification, other known to OO.org after conversion to ODT
* Spreadsheets: ODS, XLS, CSV without modification, other known to OO.org after conversion to ODS
* Presentations: PPT, PPS without modification, other known to OO.org after conversion to PPT
For Google Docs you may export, update and import all your documents, spreadsheets and presentations, for Zoho you may export documents, spreadsheets and presentations, and import documents and spreadsheets, to WebDAV you may export what you are able to open in OO.org :-)
Needs Java 5+ to work.

3 -  Colors Scale


Assign colors to the cells depending on the value and scale generated by the maximum and minimum.

Add submenú Color Scale… in menu Data.

4 -  Read Text


This add-on lets an external program read selected text from the OpenOffice.org application. If you use it with an external text-to-speech program,

it can help you to edit your writing or to compare your document’s text with a printed document. It can help you to learn a new language or to find out how to say words you do not know.

5- Writer’s Tools

Writer’s Tools is a set of utilities designed to help OpenOffice.org users perform a wide range of tasks. Using Writer’s Tools, you can back up documents, look up and translate words and phrases, manage text snippets, and keep tabs on document statistics. Writer’s Tools includes the following utilities:

- Lookup Tool lets you look up the currently selected word in several online references, including Cambridge Dictionaries, WordNet, and Google Define.

- Google Translate tool can help you to quickly translate selected text fragments between different languages using the Google Translate service.

- Show on the Map tool allows you to select a city, a street name, or a post code and map it using Google Maps.

- Email Backup tool can be used to quickly send a backup copy of the currently opened document to a specified email address.

- Multi-format Backup tool saves the currently opened Writer document in the Word, RTF, and TXT formats. The backup files are stored in a zip archive with a date stamp.

- Remote Backup allows you to quickly save a backup copy of the current document on an FTP server.

- Amazon S3 Backup tool backs up the currently opened document to Amazon S3.

- Start/Stop Timer tool can be used to keep tabs on the time spent on the currently opened document and save the time data (the document name, used time, and date) in the accompanying WriterDB database.

- Text Markup formats the document using the DokuWiki markup.

- Post to Microblog tool can be used to send messages to the Identi.ca and Twitter microblogging services.

- Bookmarks tool allows you to bookmark often-used documents, so you can access them with a few mouse clicks.

- Add to Noteboook tool is designed to quickly add text snippets, links, and notes to the supplied database.

- Database tool opens the WriterDB database, where you can use the available forms to manage notes and tasks.

- Visual Word Count tool shows the current word count and lets you monitor your writing progress.

- Tasks tool is a no-frills to-do manager that allows you to quickly add, view, and export tasks.

- miniInvoices is a customizable invoicing solution for writers. miniInvoices is built with OpenOffice.org Base and relies on the Sun Report Builder extension. The solution features support for multiple currencies and basic reporting capabilities. The latter allows the user to generate print-ready invoices and earning reports. miniInvoices is available as a separate download.

Installation instructions

To install the openoffice extensions you have to open openoffice and go to Tools → Extension manager

Then click on add buton and choose the downloaded extension you want to add.
