FlightGear- Opensource flight simulator

Written by M. Zinoune on . Posted in Gaming On Linux

Did you ever want to fly a plane yourself, but lacked the money or ability to do so? Are you a real pilot looking to improve your skills without having to take off? Do you want to try some dangerous maneuvers without risking your life? Or do you just want to have fun with a more serious game without any violence? If any of these questions apply to you, PC flight simulators are just for you.

The FlightGear flight simulator  is an open-source software, multi-platform, it is primarily aimed at civilian flight simulation. It should be appropriate for simulating general aviation as well as civilian aircraft.

The FlightGear support multiple range of platforms :

  • Linux (any distribution and platform),

  • Windows NT/2000/XP (Intel/AMD platform),

  • Windows 95/98/ME,

  • BSD UNIX,

  • Sun-OS,

  • Macintosh.

At present, there is no other known flight simulator – commercial or free – supporting such a broad range of platforms.

If you want to install Flightgear on Ubuntu :

sudo apt-get install flightgear

This game SUCKS from a gamer/novice point of view. So far as I can tell, you have to be a programmer to setup ANYTHING other than the default plane on the default airstrip. I would like to be able to pick a plane and an airstrip from a menu, not hack the damned source to get what I want.

“So far as I can tell”
This should warn anybody who believes this nonsense.

Has anyone been able to get Flightgear a flight simulator or any other flight sim to work in a ubuntu environment or any other environment. I used one years ago and had great time but now nothing seems to work. Any quick fixes out there , or slow ones? Please comment

Bob is both right and wrong.

Flightgear is a flight *simulator*. It is not an arcade style game to just muck around. You need to have some understanding of flying in order to get the most out of the game. Also, a joystick is pretty much necessary to get analog control of the plane like in real flying.

There is a program called fgrun, which is also shipped with the windows version, that will do exactly what bob wants. It’s a graphical application to select a plane (with 3d preview), airport and runway/parking position and will start Flightgear. You can also adjust the most relevant settings. Kind of like you do it in MS Flight simulator. So just install fgrun and STFU.

  • ???

the point of any flight Sim is to teach and learn how to fly said commercial plane if you don’t get that than don’t play

Every one admits that life seems to be not cheap, but some people need cash for various things and not every one earns enough cash. Therefore to receive fast credit loans or sba loan should be a correct way out.

I tried it and it works with a regular zip file, but if you password-protect the .zip file it does NOT work.

After install as above, run shell script /opt/Citrix/ICAClient/wfica.sh manually and note lib errors still occur. I had the x64 motif loaded but had to manually install the x86 too. Got that from http://rpmfind.net/linux/rpm2html/search.php?query=libXm.so.4 Even after that, I still had to do a “yum install alsa-lib.i686 alsa-lib.x86_64″ to resolve any additional libasound.so.2 errors. Once those two lib issues were resolved, Citix Web Interface launched apps fine by telling browser to open launch.ica using /opt/Citrix/ICAClient/wfica.sh. Good luck Ernesto!
