Canonical Shuts Down Ubuntu One File Services

I am very sad to inform you guys that Canonical has decided to shut down the Ubuntu One file services with the purpose of focusing efforts and spending all the energy on important strategic initiatives. Jan Silber has posted an article on canonical’s blog where she gives arguments on this unexpected shutdown and ask the user to understand this decision take by Canonical.

Cloud storage war is not the place where Canonical wants to be. it is very hard to compete with big giants such as Google and Dropbox that offer more free space to the user. If Canonical wants to offer a service, it should be competitive in a global scale and for Ubuntu One to continue to do that would require more investment that Canonical is willing to make.

It is a very hard thing to make the best operating system for phones, tablets and desktops, but this is the main goal of Canonical for now and it can not afford to spend time on projects that offer no promise on a global market.

Unfortunately is no longer be possible to purchase storage or music from the Ubuntu One store and we can not expect Ubuntu One app in the upcoming Ubuntu 14.04 LTS release.

Do you have files in your Ubuntu One account? Are they important that you need to download them? What is going to happen with your data?

Don’t worry! Canonical is taking care of everything. According to the official announcement the user content will remain available for download until 31st July, but better hurry up and backup your files because after July of this year all the content will be deleted.

“We will work to ensure that customers have an easy path to download all their content from Ubuntu One to migrate to other personal cloud services”, reads the article.
